ANOTHER BIG NAME JOINS TOURNAMENT FIELD; FRED FUNK COMMITS TO AT&T CHAMPIONS CLASSIC
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – A player who creates headlines on the Champions Tour and the PGA Tour, Fred Funk today committed to the AT&T Champions Classic. Just prior to taking the tee at this week’s Champions Tour event in Newport Beach, Calif., Funk made his intentions known.
The addition of Funk adds to a stellar list of commitments received to date for the 54-hole AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club, including defending champion Tom Purtzer and former winners Tom Kite, Gil Morgan and Raymond Floyd, along with some other top newcomers to the tour, including Bernhard Langer, Nick Price, John Cook, Jeff Sluman and Fulton Allem and Mark O’Meara, who played in last year’s event. Current Charles Schwab Cup Champion Loren Roberts and the top money winner and Player of the Year from 2007, Jay Haas, are also in the field.
At age 51, Funk continues to split time between the two tours. He started the 2008 season in Hawaii with a T25 finish at the Mercedes-Benz Championship on the PGA Tour and then had a T10 at the Sony Open on the PGA Tour, which included a second round, 6-under-par. He stayed in Hawaii for the season-opening Champions Tour MasterCard Championship, which he won by two strokes over Allen Doyle. His 54-hole total of 21-under-par 195 included a second-round 9-under-par 63.
Funk’s win at the MasterCard was his third Champions Tour victory in 14 career starts. He got his first win late in 2006 at the AT&T Championship in San Antonio in only his third start after turning 50 midway through that year. He made 25-of-29 cuts on the PGA Tour in 2006. Last season, he joined Craig Stadler as the only players to claim a PGA Tour and Champions Tour event in the same year. He set a Champions Tour record with an 11 stroke victory at the Turtle Bay Championship early in the 2007 season and then followed that up with a victory on the PGA Tour at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico.
Tickets are available to purchase for the AT&T Champions Classic, with a variety of ticket packages available, that benefit the Champions for Charity program. For a complete list of groups selling tickets as a fundraising opportunity, visit the event’s website at www.attchampionsclassic.com.
