MARK O’MEARA JOINS AT&T CHAMPIONS CLASSIC FIELD

Former SoCal Resident Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Masters and British Open Wins

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Two-time Major Champion on the PGA Tour Mark O’Meara is the latest big name to appear on the AT&T Champions Classic player commitment list for the March 10-16 Champions Tour event at Valencia Country Club in the Santa Clarita Valley.

O’Meara, 51, has Southern California ties dating back to his teenage years when his family moved to California.  Living in south Orange County near Mission Viejo Country Club, he won the California State Amateur and the U.S. Amateur in 1979 before going on to star at Long Beach State where he became an All-American.

O’Meara notched 16 victories throughout his PGA Tour career.  His accomplishments in 1998 took his status to another level – that of Major Championship winner – winning the Masters Tournament and British Open on his way to being named PGA Tour Player of the Year and becoming the oldest player, at age 41, to win two major championships in the same year.  He was also named Player of the Year by the PGA of America and the Golf Writers Association of America in 1998.  He was the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1981.  His first win came in 1984, and he has accumulated four wins in the prestigious AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (1989, ’90, ’92, and ’97) and also won the event in 1985 as the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am.

Joining the Champions Tour last year, just prior to the AT&T Champions Classic, O’Meara played in 16 events.  He recorded four second-place finishes and rounded out a T-10 showing at Valencia CC last year.

The addition of O’Meara adds to a stellar list of commitments received to date, including defending champion Tom Purtzer and former winners Tom Kite, Gil Morgan and Raymond Floyd, along with some top newcomers to the tour, including Bernhard Langer, John Cook, Jeff Sluman and Fulton Allem.
