Santa Clarita, CA (March 12th, 2007) – AT&T Champions Classic tournament week at Valencia Country Club got off to a great start with the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Pro-Am today as temperatures were high but scores were low.
As temperatures climbed into the mid-90s, the team of Greg Amsler (Santa Clarita), John Amsler (San Antonio, Tex.), Everette Harp (Valencia) and Jeff Kreitzman (Santa Clarita) teamed with Champions Tour professional Barry Jaeckel to shoot a “cool” net score of 48. Coming in one stroke behind was the “Canyon Country” team of James Doty, Daniel Close, Matt Gale and Bill Lodes, who combined with professional partner Howard Twitty as the only other group to break the 50 barrier.
The 125-players, playing a one-low ball net format tournament, helped raise money for the hospital’s foundation.
Two additional Pro-Am Tournaments will be held this week on Wednesday and Thursday leading into the opening round of the 54-hole AT&T Champions Classic on Friday.
Open qualifying will be held on Tuesday at TPC Valencia as a number of players will vie for eight spots to get into the tournament field. In addition, Andy Bean and Mark McCumber will test their skills at Magic Mountain, hitting balls in and around two different rides at the famous theme park at 11:30 a.m. At 3:00 p.m., Joe Inman, Jim Thorpe, David Eger, Vance Heafner and Chip Beck will team with local Junior golfers for a five-hole Pro-Junior exhibition tournament.
Tickets are available to purchase for Wednesday-Sunday play onsite at the Main Gate of the course for $15.
