SANTA CLARITA,
Calif. – It’s the same game with a different name.
The SBC Classic golf tournament will now be named the AT&T
Classic as sponsor SBC Communications takes on the name of
AT&T Inc. after purchasing the former parent company,
according to Brian Fitzgerald, executive director.
“The only
thing that is changing with the tournament is the name,”
stated Fitzgerald. “We are going to have the same golfers
playing, the same people managing the tournament, and the
same great support from the community and its volunteers as
we’ve had in previous years.”
Fitzgerald is charged
with transitioning the new name and logo change via all tournament
communications, including tournament signs and banners, brochures
and literature, web site and apparel.
The AT&T Classic
will enter its seventeenth year this March 6-12, 2006 and
feature the top golfers on the Champions Tour. Previous players
include Des Smyth (2005 winner), Gil Morgan (2004 winner),
Tom Purtzer (2003 winner), Tom Kite (2002 winner), Raymond
Floyd, and Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange and Fuzzy Zoeller.
Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has resided in
various areas of Los Angeles, including Rancho Park Golf Course
and Wilshire Country Club, before settling in Valencia in
2001. Last month, tournament sponsors extended their contract
with the Valencia Country Club though 2007, with an option
for 2008. Attendance of the tournament has steadily increased
by 10 percent to 20 percent each year. The weeklong 2005 event
drew an estimated 40,000 golf fans.
