SANTA
CLARITA, Calif. (February 14, 2005) - The AT&T CLASSIC today
announced the addition of Craig Stadler, 2003 Champions Tour
Rookie of the Year and last year’s leading money winner,
who will compete in the 2005 AT&T CLASSIC scheduled March 7-13
at the acclaimed Valencia Country Club in Santa Clarita. Stadler
joins a legendary group of golfers already committed to playing,
including Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, and returning champion
Gil Morgan (see attached roster list), all of whom are vying
for a share of the tournament’s $1.55 million purse,
including a first prize of $232,500.
“The
addition of Craig Stadler makes this one of the most prestigious
groups of players to ever compete at the AT&T CLASSIC,”
said AT&T CLASSIC Tournament Director Peter deYoung. “We
are thrilled that Craig decided to play, and we’re sure
that fans will be equally excited to see him and the rest
of the stars up close during the practice rounds and the tournament
itself.”
The 2004
Champions Tour leading money winner, Stadler won a tour best
five titles last year and also made history when he became
the first Champions Tour player to win a PGA Tour event with
a one-stroke victory at the B.C. Open. Additionally, he recorded
12 Top 10 finishes in 2004 and finished second in the 2004
Charles Schwab Cup standings behind Hale Irwin. Prior to joining
the Champions Tour in 2003, Stadler accumulated 13 PGA Tour
victories including a Masters Tournament Championship (1982)
and a victory at The Tour Championship (1991).
Last year’s
tournament proved to be one of the most exciting Champions
Tour events of 2004 as Gil Morgan, rebounding from a heartbreaking
second-place finish in 2003, put on a clinic en route to cruising
to the title. Other past tournament champions include Tom
Kite, Raymond Floyd, and Tom Purtzer. Also of special note
is the participation of longtime PGA Tour standout and fan
favorite Curtis Strange, who will be making one of his first
Champions Tour appearances at the 2005 AT&T CLASSIC. Each day
of the tournament will be aired on The Golf Channel.
Tickets
to the AT&T CLASSIC are available for purchase through the
Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Foundation at 661-253-8082
as well as via the Los Angeles County Junior Golf Foundation
at 213-738-2972. Additionally, the tournament is inviting
other charities and nonprofit organizations to join the “Champions
for Charity” and “Charity Partners” programs,
which provide organizations with the opportunity to utilize
the AT&T CLASSIC to generate funds through the sale of tickets
and corporate hospitality. For information regarding charity
involvement, contact the AT&T CLASSIC at 661-260-1897.
